Famous artist, David Hockney, has branched out into digital art and would like you to join him! Come on an exploration of painting apps and have a go at entering the digital art world yourself, exhibiting your art online for critical acclaim.

Session 1 Hockney and his iPad Art

Objectives

Computing

  • Select and use software on a tablet to design and create artistic content.
  • Be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of ICT.
  • Evaluate and apply IT, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.

Art

  • Develop an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Meet David Hockney and explore his iPad art. Are you up for his ‘tablart’ challenge of creating your own digital artwork? Review some painting apps to get you started!

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To explore and review a range of painting apps and compare and rate features.
  • To learn about David Hockney and his artwork, including his iPad™ art.

Children will:

  • Meet David Hockney and explore his iPad™ art.
  • Review a range of painting apps and create a table of comparative features with scores for each.
  • Select a painting app to use to create a piece of art for David Hockney.

Session 2 Digital art 'testing'

  • Develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
  • Use sketch books to record observations and to review and revisit ideas.

Teaching and Activities

Explore the art of Hockney and digital landscape artist, Andy Maitland for inspiration. Test out your winning painting app and begin to plan your own piece of digital art.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To investigate the features of a painting app to fully understand its functions and features.
  • To explore, photograph and sketch ideas for a digital landscape painting.

Children will:

  • Have a look at digital landscape paintings by Hockney and Andy Maitland.
  • Investigate their chosen painting app to fully understand its functions and features.
  • Plan their piece of digital art through photography and sketches.
