That was the verdict of children I spoke to at Sherwell Valley Primary School in Torbay, Devon. I was amazed, not because children were discussing a favourite term, but because the term to which they were referring was Spring Term of Y6 – their last before SATs, normally a low point in their school career.

After many years of service, Hamilton's WebLearner will close at the end of April 2018. We built WebLearner at a time when there were few protected opportunities for children to build or contribute to websites. There now exist many excellent alternatives (Pobble amongst them), and we feel it is time to retire our old friend.

Were you having trouble with blank areas in plans? If 'starters', 'whole class teaching' and other parts of Maths and Reception English plans appeared blank when you downloaded them from our site, please read more. The problem was caused by a recent update to Word 2016, which many systems implemented in September.

New this term: documents to help you gain consistency in teaching maths across your school. We have written new, clear, nicely laid out documents to allow you to see and plan progression in Addition and Subtraction and in Multiplication and Division. They include both mental and written strategies.

Do you know a secondary schools that would be interested in our new bank of numeracy materials? Hamilton are running a one-year trial during which we shall provide free materials designed to sustain/improve numeracy at all levels and in line with the KS3 curriculum, including problem-solving and reasoning.

Hamilton’s new Reception English plans cover all Literacy EYFS outcomes as well as selected outcomes in other curriculum areas. Plans allow complete flexibility: teach them in any order within the term and adapt activities to the individual needs of your children and to include continuous provision.

Mastery: a proper working definition. What does mastery mean? How do we know where children are on their journey towards it? What aspects of understanding enable children to get to mastery? It's not as simple as being able to mimic a particular procedure; there are both skills and metaskills involved.

Each week, inevitably, there are some children who are unable to succeed on the age-related expected objectives. So, Hamilton is providing two extra support activities a week for every whole year group. These can be done by a TA with a small group of children.
