Extra Maths Support - Year 2
Each week, inevitably, there are some children who are unable to succeed on the age-related expected objectives. These extra support activities can be done by a teaching assistant with a small group of children. There are two activities for each week, linked to the maths in Hamilton’s plans for that week. Each activity consists of a detailed but simple bullet-pointed lesson outline for the TA and a Child Sheet. These intervention activities, if used consistently as you go along, have the potential to make a lot of difference to the children who are below ARE.
Monster playground (1): Counting in 2s. Decorate the cake (2): Finding ½ and ¼ of amounts (whole number answers).
Square sums (1): Adding 'friendly' 2-digit numbers using partitioning (1s<10 and 10a<100). Pocket money (2): Subtracting 11, 12, 13 from 2-digit numbers by counting back.
Coin towers (1): Making amounts using 10p coins and other small coins. Time Loop (2): Telling the time to the half hour on analogue and digital clocks.
Clever twos (1): Early multiplications (in 2s). Ring the twos (2): Early divistion (in 2s).
Double your money (1): Doubling 11 to 20. Fair or not fair (2): Halving even numbers from 20 to 30.
Mystery numbers (1): Finding missing numbers in number bond sentences. Inbetweenies (2): Placing numbers on a 0 to 100 beaded line. Comparing 2-digit numbers.
No Extra Support for SATs week. Good luck!
