Extra Maths Support - Year 5
The extra support activities below match Hamilton’s weekly maths plans. We now also provide Year 5 maths as short blocks. We will eventually be phasing out the plans, as we believe our short blocks offer you all of the same advantages and more, including the integration of the problem-solving investigations into each unit of study. Find out more about the advantages of Hamilton's short blocks.
Back to the start (1): Adding/subtracting 1, 10, 100 and 1000 to/from 4-digit numbers (not crossing 10s, 100s or 1000s). Line 'em up (2): Placing 4-digit numbers on landmarked lines.
Digit dance (1): Using place value to add and subtract, e.g. 4582 + 300, 4582 - 50 (not crossing 10s, 100s or 1000s). Change challlenge (2): Using counting up (Frog) to calculate change from £50.
Left or right (1): Multiplying numbers with one decimal place by 10 and dividing 2-digit whole numbers by 10. Left, left or right, right? (2): Understanding place value in numbers with two decimal places; Beginning to multiply numbers with two decimal places by 100 and divide 3-digit numbers by 100.
Lost at sea (1): Plotting points in the first quadrant. Times table trick (2): Doubling the 3 times table to give the 6 times table.
Mammoth multiplications (1): Using known times tables and place value to multiply, e.g. 4 x 3, 4 x 30, 4 x 300. Multiplication splits (2): Using the grid method to multiply 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers.
Fraction facts (1): Finding simple unit and related non-unit fractions of amounts (1/3s, 1/4s and 1/5s). Decimal pictures (2): Equivalent fractions and decimals (halves, quarters and tenths).
Any left? (1): Using chunking to divide, answers between 10 and 20, with remainders. Tiny steps (2): Counting in steps of ½, 1/3, and ¼.
Guess my number (1): Understanding place value in 5-digit numbers. Hops, skips and jumps (2): Using counting up (Frog) to subtract 4-digit numbers from multiples of 1000 (e.g. 4000 - 3786), or when the larger number has zeros (e.g. 4002 - 3987).
Ali Ant's long walk (1): Finding perimeters. Rapid rectangles (2): Finding the area of rectangles.
Mark and round (1): Placing numbers with one decimal place on a number line; Rounding numbers with one decimal place to the nearest whole number. Frog's teeny hops (2): Finding the difference between decimal numbers on either side of a whole number, e.g. 1.8 and 2.3.
Awesome adders (1): Using compact column addition to add pairs of 3-digit numbers. Super scores (2): Using compact column addition to add pairs of 4-digit numbers.
