Use census data to learn about people who lived in your local area in the Victorian period. See how the overall characteristics of local people changed over the course of the Victorian period, while gaining an understanding of different ways data can be organised and presented.

Session 1 Victorian Census Detectives

Objectives

History

  • Continue to develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of Britain, local and world history, establishing clear narratives within and across the periods they study.
  • Conduct a local history study of an aspect of history from a period beyond 1066 that is significant to the local area.
  • Understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources.

Lesson Planning

Children build up a picture of one or more local Victorian families using information from the 1841 census.

Children will:

  • Work on 1841 census extract and investigate who lived in the local area in 1841; what were their jobs? What were typical names?

  • Census data – see Teachers’ Notes.
  • Optional: Example blank form from modern census.

Session 2 Census Collating and Counting

Objectives

History

  • Continue to develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of Britain, local and world history, establishing clear narratives within and across the periods they study.
  • Conduct a local history study of an aspect of history from a period beyond 1066 that is significant to the local area.
  • Understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources.

Maths

  • Statistics: interpret and construct pie charts and line graphs and use these to solve problems.

Lesson Planning

Children compare data from the previous session to data from the 1891 census and collate the results in a chart.

Children will:

  • Know how to interpret original census data.
  • Produce graphs and charts for analysis.
