Celebrating Me

Meet `Maisy Mouse´, listen to a story and think about what makes you special. Investigate birth months, the days of the week and make simple pictograms. How do you celebrate your birthdays? Do you have a party? Plan a surprise party for someone special in school.

Session 1 Magical Me!

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Be confident to say why some activities are liked more than others.
  • Be confident to speak in a familiar group and will talk about ideas.
  • Understand other children do not always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this.
  • Know about similarities and differences between others, and among families, communities and traditions.
  • Represent own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role play and stories.

Teaching and Activities

Children are introduced to Maisy Mouse; Maisy tells children a story about being special. Afterwards children will think about what makes them and members of their family special.

Children will:

  • Identify and understand that children have different talents/qualities that make them special.
  • Express personal opinions, acknowledge those of others and respond respectfully to them.
  • Use play experiences to share knowledge of themselves.

Session 2 Happy Birthday!

Objectives

  • Talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members.
  • Know that other children do not always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this.

  • Represent own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role play and stories.
  • Try new activities, and say why some activities are liked more than others.

Teaching and Activities

Children find a mystery present and think about what the occasion could be. They consider why birthdays are celebrated; look through a keyhole into another child´s life to see how they celebrate.

Children will:

  • Develop tolerance, understanding and respect for others; know people celebrate birthdays in different ways.
  • Use play experiences to show their knowledge of birthdays.
  • Increase self-knowledge of their own family and their birthday traditions.

You Will Need

  • Prepare a mystery present with a question mark image: inside place a balloon, card, invitation and a candle
  • Bag of balloons, party hats, plastic cups, plates, cutlery
  • Plastic play food and plastic cake, candles.

Session 3 Special Birthdays

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Use everyday language to solve problems and recognise, create and describe patterns.
  • Count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number.
  • Develop narratives and explanations by connecting ideas or events.

Teaching and Activities

All aboard the birthday train! Children will go on an adventure to `Birthday Land´. What will they discover on the way? Back to class for a birthday themed Maths session!

Children will:

  • Celebrate the uniqueness of their birthday celebrations and those of their classmates.
  • Know the months of the year and days of the week.
  • Use play experiences to build upon mathematical knowledge.
  • Describe `Birthday Land'.

You Will Need

  • Selection of objects, e.g. football, teddy, car or a bag
  • Different sized pieces of wrapping paper measured to fit an object
  • Sellotape
  • Driver´s cap
  • Pieces of scrap paper to use as tickets

Session 4 Planning a celebration

  • Work as part of a group or class.
  • Represent ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role play and stories.

Teaching and Activities

Surprise! Children will read about Alfie´s birthday surprise, and then prepare for a secret surprise for someone special in school.

Children will:

  • Identify personal talents and different roles and responsibilities.
  • Be part of the party planning process and identify the contribution made by different peoples at special times.
  • Make a` You are Special´ book.
  • Recognise the importance of celebrations and taking time to celebrate together.
  • Visit 'Pobble' website.

You Will Need

  • Whiteboard and pens
  • Cake ingredients, materials and access to an oven

Session 5 Let's celebrate!

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Try new activities confidently, and say why some activities are liked more than others.
  • Speak confidently in a familiar group and talk about ideas
  • Choose the resources needed for chosen activities.
  • Express self effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs.

Teaching and Activities

Children will make the final party preparations, wait for the special guest to arrive and share their achievements.

Children will:

  • Present a part of their learning.
  • Host and make final preparations for a special celebration.
  • Celebrate their achievements describing what they enjoyed the most.
