Maths Out Loud

Counting

Together, chant the numbers to 100, using both hands to mark the 10s: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10! 11, 12 etc.

Number bonds

Put children in pairs: one child is a lion, the other a tiger! Tigers, show me 4 fingers. They calculate how many fingers their partner (the lion) must hold up to show 6 altogether. Repeat, asking tigers to show 0 to 6 fingers. Lions show the complement to 6. Try to build up the pace!
Tigers and lions swap roles. (Use for any pair you want to practise from 5 to 10.)

Small 1-100 number grids (see resources); colouring pencils; baskets of between 10 and 50 items; sticky notes; large 1 to 100 number grid; access to the book corner; a pack of 10, 20, 30… 100 cards; access to the sand tray/pit

A 1-100 number track, scissors (or use the Numicon 1-100 card number track pieces); 100-bead bar and 10s tags; 100 cubes; 1-100 grid; 10, 20, 30… 100 number cards

Creating and Thinking Critically
A set of two-digit number cards; 1-100 number grid; sticky notes; mini-whiteboards, pens and wipers; at least 100 cubes; a pack of 10, 20, 30… 100 cards
