Objectives

Early Learning Goals

  • Listen attentively in a range of situations. Listen to stories, accurately anticipating key events and respond to what is heard with relevant comments, questions or actions. Give attention to what others say and respond appropriately, while engaged in another activity.
  • Follow instructions involving several ideas or actions. Answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about experiences and in response to stories or events.
  • Express yourself effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs. Use past, present and future forms accurately when talking about events that have happened or are to happen in the future. Develop own narratives and explanations by connecting ideas or events.
  • Read and understand simple sentences. Use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. Also read some common irregular words. Demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.
  • Use phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. Also write some irregular common words. Write simple sentences which can be read by you and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

Lesson Planning

Create and record you own narrative to ‘Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car’ adding in your own experiences of car journeys.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To create and record their own narratives in response to ‘Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car’ and their own experiences of car journeys.

Children will:

  • Enjoy listening to ‘Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car’ and retell to create class story map.
  • Create their own imaginative narratives about a journey by car and record as a story map, with some text.
  • Retell their narrative using story map and resources.

  • Puppets/soft toys to represent the passengers in Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car’ by John Burningham and copies of book
  • A copy of Mr Gumpy’s Outing and Oi! Get off our Train by John Burningham
  • Selection of small world characters, farm animals, wild animals, puppets, toys
  • Playdough
  • Model vehicles
