Design and print a mosaic border

Topics Year 2/3
This unit is part of The Romans in Britain - NEW LOOK Impressive Roman mosaics - NEW LOOK

Objectives

History

  • To design a border for a printed mosaic and to evaluate the finished piece.

Enquiry question
How can we use a printing technique to create the border for a ‘Roman-style’ mosaic?

Outcomes
Children will:

  • Make informed choices on colour/design, based on prior knowledge and experience.
  • Print a neat repeating border design with good technique.

You Will Also Need

Sketch books, wooden printing sticks, some printing sticks with a smaller end (slivers of balsa work well or cut polystyrene)
Card border templates 60cm X 9cm – you need lots of these for practice runs!
Printing rollers and trays
Poster paint, pencils and white pencil crayons
A strip of sugar paper for practice printing
A large sheet of sugar paper per child (60cm X 45cm); dark colours like black or brown work well as the gaps between the printed tiles look like mortar
