Lesson Planning

Discover the art-nouveau style of Mackintosh and explore the interiors and furnishings he designed. Identify his style and influences and create your own Mackintosh-inspired chairs, using 2D and 3D shapes.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To learn about the life, work and influences of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
  • To explore designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh chairs.
  • To design a chair inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
  • To draw a chair using 2D shapes.
  • To measure lengths in mm and cm to create a chair prototype.
  • To identify design criteria for a Mackintosh inspired chair.
  • To design and create a prototype for a Mackintosh inspired chair.

Children will:

  • Explore Mackintosh’s chairs and accurately draw out their own design
  • Design and make a prototype of a chair using Mackintosh’s style and techniques as an influence
  • Use 2D shape and accurate measuring in their chair design
