KS3 Numeracy Year 7
Free Sample Resources

Explore 'Place Value and Decimals', a complete unit of consolidating numeracy resources and PowerPoint presentations. These comprehensive materials can be used to ensure that students’ numeracy remains secure and fluent through Key Stage 3. 'Four of the Best', a sample Algebra Through Numeracy Problem Solving Unit, presents a number investigation structured to teach KS3 algebra skills as well as problem-solving resilience and tactics.

Consolidating Numeracy units consist of ‘starters’ - two PowerPoint slides to provide quick numeracy revision three times a week. There are further slides which may be used to teach and consolidate the topic if the students show that they have not mastered this aspect of numeracy and are not demonstrating fluency.

As an added benefit, you will also have access to Hamilton’s Upper Key Stage 2 resources which include extra support sheets on all numeracy topics. Find out more.

Unit 1 Place Value and Decimals 1 (free)

Objectives

Day 1

  • Explore the Place Value (PV) chart from thousands to hundredths.
  • Carry out PV addition and subtraction.

Day 2

  • Explore the Place Value of large numbers by ordering and comparing on a number line.

Day 3

  • Explore the Place Value of 2-place decimals by ordering and comparing on a number line.

Teaching and Activities

Day 1

Check-up

Write numbers with up two decimal places as words and figures. Use place value to add and subtract, changing one digit at a time.

Follow-up

Use the place value grid and chart to consolidate understanding of the value of each digit, then use place value to change one digit in a number.

Day 2

Check-up

Order whole numbers and place on a number line between multiples of 10,000.

Follow-up

Use the most significant digits in 5-digit numbers to compare and place between multiples of 10,000 on number lines.

Day 3

Check-up

Order numbers with one or two decimal places. Place numbers with two decimal places between multiples of 0.1 on a number line.

Follow-up

Use the place value grid to compare numbers with one or two decimal places.

Unit 2 Four of the Best (free)

Objectives

KS3 Programme of Study Statements
-- Simplify and manipulate algebraic expressions to maintain equivalence by collecting like terms.

-- Substitute numerical values into expressions.

-- Use the four operations applied to decimals.

-- Solve problems.

-- Use algebra to generalise the structure of arithmetic, including to formulate mathematical relationships.

Teaching and Activities

Algebra
Write and simplify algebraic expressions; substitute into algebraic expressions.

Numeracy and problem solving
Investigation: Four of the Best (involving revision of adding decimals)

Algebra and problem solving
Continuation of investigation: Four of the Best (including generalisation, using algebra learnt in A1)
