Session 1 Where is China?

Objectives

History

  • Children should undertake an in- depth study of The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China.

Geography

  • Children should locate the world’s countries using maps, concentrating on their environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries, and major cities.

Lesson Planning

Locate China on a map; identify the extent of the Shang Dynasty on a map; label some major places and features.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To find out where China is and where the Shang Dynasty ruled.
  • To label a modern map of China with the extent of the Shang Dynasty rule.

Children will:

  • Explain where China is in the world.
  • Decode some of the landscape features of China from mapping conventions.
  • Transcribe historical boundaries and city locations from one map to another.

Session 2 When was the Shang Dynasty?

Objectives

History

Maths

  • Children should interpret negative numbers in context, count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers, including through zero.
  • Children should multiply and divide numbers mentally drawing upon known facts.

Produce a timeline of significant Shang rulers.

Objectives

  • Pupils’ confidence, enjoyment and mastery of language should be extended through public speaking, performance and debate.

Lesson Planning

Play the game ‘Would I Lie to you’ using descriptions of real Shang rulers and some you have invented; score points for outwitting your friends and points for detecting the fakes.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To create a fictional Shang king based on their knowledge of Shang kings.
  • To play ‘Would I Lie to You?’ game utilizing their knowledge of the Shang kings.
