Short Blocks

Maths Year 1/2 Summer Place Value and Fractions

Each unit has everything you need to teach a set of related skills and concepts.

Place value (suggested as 2 days)

Planning and Activities

Day 1
Model finding numbers between multiples of 10 on a 1–100 grid and ordering them. Identify which neighbouring multiples of 10 a number is between.
Further Teaching with Y2
Place numbers on a blank 0–100 line, e.g. 47, is just before halfway. Continue until you have estimated the position of all the multiples of 10.
Group Activities: T with Y1
Use the in-depth problem-solving investigation ‘New Neighbours’ as today’s group activity.
Or, use these activities:
Y1 -- Compare 2-digit money amounts and find ‘in between’ amounts.
Y2 -- Estimate the position of numbers on a 0–100 number line by considering nearby 10s.

Day 2
Identify ‘hidden’ numbers on a 1–100 number track by counting. Compare pairs of numbers on a 100-bead bar, using their 10s
digits to help.
Further Teaching with Y2
Create =, < and > symbols using strips of card. Model writing inequalities using < and > symbols.
Group Activities: T with Y1
Y1 -- Create two 2-digit numbers; compare them, saying which is less/greater.
-- Order items from a class shop and locate these prices on a beaded line.
Y2 -- Use symbols to record inequalities between two 2-digit numbers.
-- Pick 2-digit numbers to complete inequalities, using the symbols < and >.

Short Mental Workouts

Day 1
Count in 10s from 10

Day 2
Compare and order 2-digit numbers

Day 1
Y1: Suggest numbers between adjacent multiples of 10.
Place numbers between the correct adjacent multiples of 10.
Y2: Identify numbers on a beaded number line.
Identify numbers on a landmarked number line.

Day 2
Y1: Identify missing numbers on number lines 0-50.
and 30-80.
Y2: Write inequalities, supported by a beaded number line.
Write inequalities, supported by a landmarked number line.

Mastery: Reasoning and Problem-Solving

  • How many tens in:
    (a) 47 (b) 52 (c) 90?
  • How many 1s in:
    (a) 34 (b) 60 (c) 13?
  • Write a number between..:
    (a) 20 and 30 (b) 40 and 50.
  • Put these groups of three numbers in order, smallest first:
    (a) 30, 18, 81 (b) 51, 21, 15

  • Put these numbers in order, smallest to largest:
    93, 39, 14, 51, 48
  • Compare each pair of numbers using <, > or = signs:
    (a) 23 30 (b) 58 39 (c) 81 102
  • Complete this piece of the 1–100 grid (see download) that has numbers missing.

In-depth Investigation: New Neighbours
Children use digit cards to make 2-digit numbers between neighbouring multiples of 10.
