Maths Year 3/4 Summer Fractions and Decimals

Each unit has everything you need to teach a set of related skills and concepts.

Fractions (suggested as 5 days)

Planning and Activities

Day 1
Count in fractions on fraction number lines. Revise finding a fractional amount, using bar models and making links to division. Extend to 3-digit numbers for Y4.
Group Activities: T with Y3
Y3 -- Find unit fractions of amounts (whole-number answers)
-- Play Fraction Buzz by matching whole-number unit fractions to given numbers.
Y4 -- Find unit fractions of amounts (whole-number answers).

Day 2
Model finding unit then non-unit fractions of numbers of objects.
Group Activities: T with Y4
Use the in-depth problem-solving investigation ‘Fancy fraction answers’ as today’s group activity.
Or, use these activities:
Y3 -- Play a card game to practise finding and comparing non-unit fraction amounts.
-- Play a card game to find non-unit fractions of amounts.
Y4 -- Use knowledge of factors to write non-unit fraction facts about 24, 48 or 72; some children use a bar model to find non-unit fifths of multiples of 5.

Day 3
Use the Fractions ITP to revise equivalent fractions among 1/2s, 1/4s, 1/6s, 1/8s, 1/10s, beginning with equivalents for 1/2, then for 1/4. Repeat with other fractions.
Further Teaching with Y4
Use fraction number lines to explore equivalence of fractions and decimals.
Group Activities: T with Y4
Y3 -- Find equivalent fractions using a fraction wall.
-- Suggest fractions equivalent to ½ and 1/4.
Y4 – Use a fraction wall to find pairs of equivalent fractions.
– Make large equivalent fraction and decimal lines for tenths, eighths and twelfths, for an interactive classroom display.

Day 4
Find tenths of a number of cubes via practical demonstration. Relate this to a 0–1 line marked in tenths.
Further Teaching with Y4
Use a blank 100 square to elicit fraction-decimal equivalences.
Group Activities: T with Y3
Y3 -- Find non-unit tenths of multiples of 10.
Y4 -- Match fraction and decimal cards to fraction pictures on a 100 square.

Day 5
Explore strategies for solving example fraction word problems.
Further Teaching with Y3
Use pizzas to model adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.
Group Activities: T with Y3
Y3 -- Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
-- Play fraction pairs by adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.
Y4 -- Solve fraction word problems, using bar models to help.

Mastery: Reasoning and Problem-Solving

  • Shade 3/10 of this shape (see download) in one colour.
Shade 1/2 in another colour. How many tenths are unshaded?
  • Write the missing numbers in each sequence:
    3/4, 1, ☐, ☐, ☐, 2, 2¹/4, ☐
    3²/3, 3¹/3, ☐, ☐, ☐, 2, 1²/3
    1³/5, 1⁴/5, ☐, ☐, ☐, 2³/5, ☐
  • Use the 1/18s fraction strip (see download) to find 1/3 of 18 and 2/3 of 18. Now find 5/6 of 18.
  • 1/3 + 2/3 = 1. Write similar number sentences for fifths, eighths and tenths.

  • Always true, sometimes true or false?
-- One quarter is one point two five.
-- A number of tenths can be written as an equivalent number of hundredths.
-- A number of hundredths can be written as a number of tenths.
    -- 0.34 > 4/10
    -- 98/100 + 0.02 = 1
    -- 1.25 – 0.2 = 1.5
  • Find these fractions of £300:
    (i) 1/5
    (ii) 1/10
    (iii) 1/20
  • Write the number of tenths and twentieths which equal 2/5.
  • Estimate which is larger:
    2/3 of 999, 2/5 of 500 or 1/4 of 1000.
Write your estimate. Calculate each to check if you were correct.

In-depth Investigation: Fancy fraction answers
Children find non-unit fractions of multiples and look for patterns.
