# Maths Year 5 Autumn Flexible Blocks Explained

Hamilton's new maths blocks present everything you need to teach a term's worth of each required maths area together in one place.

The blocks are divided into units, each of which describes in detail a sequence of lessons on a closely defined set of maths objectives. Open the unit below for more detail. Use the navigation above to find blocks for your own year group.

## Unit 1 Hamilton Flexible Maths Block (suggested as 1 day)

### Objectives

Each unit is organised around a specific objective or set of closely related objectives. It contains everything you need to teach the skills and concepts for children to master those objectives.

The unit number helps you track related documents.

### Teaching and Group Activities for Understanding

Teaching
Each day's teaching is summarised for quick planning and easy reference. The teaching is described in detail in the 'Teaching & Activities' document, while the 'Teaching Resources' document contains all of the visual images you require as well as a list of the physical items that you need. 'Common Misconceptions' helps you spot areas of potential confusion before they become a problem, and also contains a list of key vocabulary for the unit.
Group Activities
Each teaching day includes differentiated group activities for children working below ARE, children working around ARE and children working at greater depth.
Days
The number of teaching days in a unit varies depending on the objectives. Teachers can adjust these in order to suit their own classes.

### Mental/Oral Maths Starters

Each day has a starter, a recommended starter, or sometimes a choice of starters.

• Some starters will warm-up skills that are required for the day's lesson (pre-requisite skills).
• Some starters will rehearse skills that pupils need to keep on-the-boil throughout the year (simmering skills).

### Procedural Fluency

Each day has a procedural fluency focus with practice sheets differentiated for children working toward ARE, at ARE and at greater depth.

### Mastery: Reasoning and Problem-Solving

• A series of problem solving and reasoning questions allow you to assess mastery for each unit.
• You can use these before or after the lesson depending on your personal pedagogy.
• These questions can be downloaded in the 'Mastery Activity' document for printing or putting up on a white board.

In-depth Investigation
These problem-solving investigations will develop maths meta-skills, and are crucial for enabling children to learn to think mathematically and articulate mathematical ideas.

Each week, inevitably, there are some children who are unable to succeed at age-related objectives. These intervention activities, if used consistently as you go along, have the potential to make a lot of difference to the children who are below ARE.
