Babies

Consider the developments you have undergone since you were a baby. Investigate the shape changes between a baby and an adult human. Look at the proportions of a human adult as shown by Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man. Draw a timeline of your life so far. Continue research into the life stages of another animal concentrating on how quickly infants develop.

Session 1 Babies (A)

Objectives

Science

  • Describe reproduction process in plants and animals Year 5.
  • Describe changes as humans develop to old age.

Lesson Planning

Consider the development undergone since you were a baby. Draw a timeline of your life so far. Continue research into the life stages of another animal concentrating on how quickly the babies develop. Have a baby photo challenge!

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To be aware of the changes that have taken place (both physical & developmental) since they were babies. Compare with the young of other animals.

Children will:

  • Describe the stages of the human life cycle.
  • Compare the development of human babies with those of other animals.

  • photos (that children have brought into class) of childrenn as babies on display (but covered temporarily)

Session 2 Babies (B)

Objectives

Science

  • Describe reproduction process in plants and animals.

Lesson Planning

Look at the proportions of a human adult as shown by Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man. Investigate the shape changes between a baby and an adult human, concentrating on the head to body length ratio. Measure and draw graphs. Sketch children and adults in proportion.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To become aware of the way the proportions of a human body changes as a baby grows and develops into an adult.

Children will:

  • Describe how the proportions of a human body changes as growth occurs from baby to adult.
  • Use this knowledge to draw child & adult human figures.
