History

  • Develop an awareness of the past, use common words and phrases relating to the passing of time.
  • Begin to understand chronological framework.
  • Develop a curiosity about changes within living memory and the ways in which we can find out about these changes.
  • Identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods of time.

Lesson Planning

Children read ‘Peepo!’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg and compare and contrast similarities and differences between then and now. Children then create a time capsule using their pictures and writing from Session 1 for future generations.

Teaching Outcomes
To discuss if the future will see change, or remain the same as now.
To use ‘PEEPO!’ to identify how things have changed and what has stayed the same.

Children will:

  • Join in the discussion, explaining their ideas clearly, some justifying their ideas with reasons.
  • Find 3 similarities and 3 differences to compare and contrast then and now.
  • Think about possible changes in the future.

  • Colour copy of one page from PEEPO! and pre-formed table for each child
  • Timeline demarcated with years, in decades 1940 – 2030
  • Table with 2 columns, ‘similarities’ and ‘differences’
  • Time capsule
