Objectives

English

  • Use discussion in order to learn and become competent in the arts of speaking and listening.
  • Speak clearly and convey ideas confidently using standard English.
  • Justify their ideas with reasons.
  • Ask questions to check understanding.

History

  • Develop an awareness of the past, use common words and phrases relating to the passing of time.
  • Begin to understand chronological framework.
  • Develop a curiosity about changes within living memory and the ways in which we can find out about these changes.

Lesson Planning

Children discuss and write down what they think their parents did at the end of their school day and how this is similar or different to today’s children. Children can be introduced to ‘Travelling Ted’.

Teaching Outcomes
To participate actively in a class discussion to set the scene for the topic.
To enable children to participate actively in a class discussion (see above) to stimulate curiosity about their parents’ and grandparents’ childhoods and so motivate enquiry and research.

Children will:

  • Join in the discussion, explaining their ideas clearly, some justifying their ideas with reasons.
  • Use vocabularly to express the passing of time, such as ‘in those days’, ‘in the past’ ‘when they were little’.
  • Feel motivated to discover more about the past.
