Topics Reception
This unit is part of Celebrations Celebrating Me

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members.
  • Know that other children do not always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this.
  • Know about similarities and differences between others, and among families, communities and traditions.
  • Represent own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role play and stories.
  • Try new activities, and say why some activities are liked more than others.

Lesson Planning

Children find a mystery present and think about what the occasion could be. They consider why birthdays are celebrated; look through a keyhole into another child´s life to see how they celebrate.

Children will:

  • Develop tolerance, understanding and respect for others; know people celebrate birthdays in different ways.
  • Use play experiences to show their knowledge of birthdays.
  • Increase self-knowledge of their own family and their birthday traditions.
