History

  • Study an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066, for example; changes in an aspect of social history such as clothing.
  • Address and sometimes devise historically valid questions about change, cause, similarity and difference and significance.

Lesson Planning

Use traditional methods of tie-dye to create different patterns; follow instructions to apply tie-dye techniques and create your own tie-dye design.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • Follow instructions to apply the practical expertise to tie-dye a piece of fabric.
  • Describe the significant changes to the influence on British clothing choices during the late 20th century.

Children will:

  • Describe the significant changes to the influences on British clothing during the late 20th century.
  • Use traditional methods of tying and dying fabric to create different patterns.
  • Work together to follow instructions to apply tie dye techniques to a piece of fabric.

You Will Need

  • White cotton fabric squares, approx. 30 x 30cm (1 each)
  • Elastic bands
  • Washing-up bowls, rubber gloves, aprons, wooden spoons
  • Dye solution (variety of colours)
