What is tie dye?

Topics Year 2/3
This unit is part of British Clothing 1066 to Present Day Tie Dye

Objectives

History

  • Study an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066, for example changes in an aspect of social history such as clothing.
  • Address and sometimes devise historically valid questions about change, cause, similarity and difference and significance.

Maths

  • Solve problems by applying mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Lesson Planning

Find out about the period of British history that is associated with tie-dye fabric; solve problems of how to create tie-dye patterns.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • Understand that the bright colours and relaxed style of tie dye represented a rejection of the formal and conservative dress of the previous generation.
  • Persevere and work systematically to find the solution of where to tie the fabric to recreate the pattern.

Children will:

  • Understand which period of British history is associated with tie-dye fabric.
  • Work together to solve the problem of how to create the different patterns using tie-dye techniques.

You Will Need

  • Squares of white fabric (or white t-shirts)
  • Elastic bands
