Lesson Planning

Investigate some of the features of Autumn. Create an observational drawing of an Autumn scene based on the painting ‘Autumn Leaves’ by John Everrett Millais.

Teaching Outcomes
To create observational drawings using different techniques and compare these to the painting ‘Autumn Leaves’.
To discuss the features of autumn.

Children will:

  • Create an observational drawing of an autumn scene.
  • Talk about and use colours, lines and shapes.
  • Look at the painting ‘Autumn Leaves’ and compare it to own pictures.
  • Discuss features of autumn.

You Will Need

  • Brown A3 sugar paper
  • Oil pastels (autumn colours)
  • Autumn leaves (to be collected by the children)
  • Magnifying glasses
  • A basket of autumnal fruits and vegetables
  • Vivaldi’s ‘Autumn’.
