  • Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries, as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied at this key stage.

Art

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
  • Use drawing, painting to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.

SMSC

  • Develop an acceptance that other people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself.

Lesson Planning

Examine the 53 flag designs from Commonwealth Countries. Learn why colours and pictures are used on certain flags. Design a unique flag for the Commonwealth.

Teaching Outcomes
To become familiar with flags of the Commonwealth, to use world maps to locate countries in the Commonwealth.
To create flags that use symbols to show your identity.
To celebrate each person’s uniqueness.

Children will:

  • Increase self-knowledge by reflecting on their interests and abilities.
  • Celebrate the uniqueness of each child in the class.
  • Create a unique individual flag.

  • Pre-cut flags, straws, pens, crayons and pencils
