LKS2 Science Strands

Year 3

Attracting & Stretching
The mysteries of magnetic forces and springs are revealed during this Strand. Find out which materials attract & repel & which are non-magnetic & carry out an investigation using magnets. Spring into Science comparing elastic bands & springs.

Eating
Find out about food groups & how a healthy balanced diet includes different amounts of food from all the groups. Look at human digestive system & the diets of herbivores, carnivores & omnivores.  Learn about teeth & investigate tooth decay using eggshells.

Growth of Plants
This Strand looks at the function of the leaves, roots, stem & flowers of a plant in promoting healthy growth. Chn carry our several hands on investigations; create an advert to entice bees to their flower and produce a poster about the growth of plants.

Material Properties
Chn compare the properties of everyday materials & relate them to everyday uses of the materials. Investigate plastic, safe floor surfaces for babies & their own questions about paper. Finally chn research one material in detail to create a book.

Rocks & Soils
What is under our feet? Chn are always fascinated by rocks & in this strand they describe rocks & compare their properties after tackling some exciting activities. Discover how soil is formed from rocks & investigate the permeability of different soils.

Sun & Shadows
Discover fascinating facts about the Sun. Explore the earth's movement to give seasons & day & night. Investigate shadows & sundials. Discuss safety in the Sun & solar energy. Chn also find out about transparent, opaque & translucent materials.

Year 4

Circuits & Conductors
Reinforce chn’s understanding of simple circuits & use symbols to draw them. Discover which materials are the best electrical conductors & use this info to make switches. Chn wire plugs & find what happens to a bulb’s brightness when circuits are changed.

Friction & Resistance
After a brief revision of forces already met, chn investigate friction, air resistance & water resistance. There are lots of hands on activities & investigations using sports shoes, mini parachutes & balsa boats to hone their scientific enquiry skills.

Hot & Cold
In this Strand chn discover that some materials are better thermal insulators than others. Several investigations are carried out to discover which materials are best suited for keeping things warm or cool, & chn’s findings help them design a new product.

Life in Habitats
Reinforce chn’s understanding of living things & focus on where they live. Find out how they are adapted to their habitat & conduct an investigation into the most suitable habitat for a mini-beast. Study food chains & the nutritional needs of organisms.

On the Move
Chn have fun investigating their own skeletons & muscles. Look closely at bones, joints & muscles & compare human skeletons with other creatures’. They use their muscles & bones to discover the effects of exercise, then take & compare body measurements.

Separating Solids & Liquids
Chn reinforce their understanding of solids & liquids & states of matter. They find out how solids & liquids can be separated when they become mixed & explore reversible changes. They create their own sorting machines & learn how to filter a solution.

There are currently no separate Investigation Strands nor a Sex Education Strand for LKS2.
