UKS2 Science Strands
Year 5
Circulation Explore the structure of the heart & lungs. The double circulation thru the lungs & the rest of the body is explained & chn learn more about blood! How does exercise affect pulse rate? Why is exercise good for us & what can harm the heart & circulation?
Flowering Plants Chn revise the parts of plants & their functions, the conditions affecting plant growth & plants as living things. Investigations into seed dispersal & germination are carried out & chn develop an understanding that plats are a vital part of human life.
Gases Gases are one of the three states of matter, each of which has its own properties. Chn develop an understanding that gases are matter, have weight & are all around us. They investigate the uses of gases in everyday life & some properties of common gases.
Sound Water exists as solid, liquid & gas in everyday conditions. Chn investigate the properties of these different states of matter & how they change from one to the other. They apply this to the water cycle & consider the importance of water to daily life.
Space Chn find fascinating facts about the Sun, Moon & Earth & develop an understanding of day & night, the four seasons & the Moon’s phases. The Sun & the planets making up our Solar System are investigated, along with the other stars in their constellations.
Water Water exists as solid, liquid & gas in everyday conditions. Chn investigate the properties of these different states of matter & how they change from one to the other. They apply this to the water cycle & consider the importance of water to daily life.
Year 5/6
Environment Look at requirements for plant germination & growth before finding out more about soils. Then consider how diff plants suit diff habitats & investigate dandelion growth in various habitats. Finally design & make an electrical device for a plant nursery.
Year 6
Balanced Forces Look again at the different forces studied earlier – gravity, air resistance, friction and upthrust of liquids. Investigate what happens when an elastic band stretches under force. Develop an understanding of balanced & unbalanced forces & their effects.
Chains & Webs Revise the conditions needed for plant growth & discuss plants as living things, concentrating on plants producing food by photosynthesis. Look at classification using keys. Investigate the interdependence of plants & animals using food chains & webs.
Drugs & Bugs Look at microbes in detail & gain an understanding of their size & variety. Discover the beneficial & harmful effects of different microbes & carry out several investigations on yeast, compost & food decay. Look at the role of microbes & drugs in diseases.
Further Circuits Begin with revision of simple circuits & then lots of hands on experience with symbols, diagrams & incomplete circuits. Chn investigate the effect of the length of wire in a circuit, compare series & parallel circuits then face some Circuit Challenges!
Light & Sight Identify sources of light & revise facts that light travels in straight lines & opaque objects form shadows. Understand that to see, light needs to enter the eye. Investigate light reflection, white light made of many colours & the speed of light.
Reversible & Irreversible Changes Chn revise their knowledge of reversible changes using gritty bread & begin to explore some irreversible changes by making their own plastic, investigating nails rusting & finding out what happens to materials when they are heated, cooled &/or burnt.
Separating Materials Separate solids using sieves & magnets. Chn then identify solutions & mixtures before removing materials by filtering & evaporation. Thru investigations chn develop an understanding of factors that affect the dissolving of materials to create solutions.
Found under the Sex Education button:
Human Reproduction & Relationships Discuss why living things need to reproduce & look in detail at human life cycle, comparing it to other animals. Give chn Flour Babies challenge & study changes at puberty. Research rites of passage in different cultures. Look at STDs (partic HIV/Aids).
Found under the Investigations button:
Astronomy This is an investigation opportunity for chn to tackle in the summer term at the end of Year 6. Have fun investigating some aspects of astronomy, including the sun, moon and stars. Make a simple telescope & a planisphere & find out about sunspots.
