Introduction to Plans

The English and Maths Hamilton Trust plans available are New Framework Literacy Unit plans and Maths Teaching Sequences plus the old Weekly Plans (found in Plan Archive) for NLS English and NNS Maths. We are currently writing new Maths Weekly Plans and those for the Autumn Term are now available on the site. They are provided as MS Word documents, using specially formatted tables which make it easy to add, delete or change text whilst preserving the table structure. As Word documents they are very easy to download – see Downloading Word files for assistance with this.

Literacy Unit plans for the single year groups (Y1 to Y6) and the Mixed Age Range Units for R/Y1, Y1/2, Y3/4 and Y5/6 for Years A & B are available (a two-year rolling programme). Each Unit includes individual book and website lists and an overview. In each term there is also an Overview of the whole year's Units to help with long term planning. Some new FREE Foundation plans for Spring & Summer Terms written by Ruth Merttens are available from Ginn/Heinemann. Click here to find out more.

The old English Weekly Plans based on the NLS are still available on the site (Plan Archive tab) and could prove useful to fill in odd weeks during the term.

The English plans are provided in a list which allows teachers to select the appropriate number of Units (or Weeks if selecting from the Plan Archive) from a much larger set of plans (only available to Friends of Hamilton) and then to click a mouse to produce a downloadable set. This not only allows the teacher to follow personal preference with regard to the choice of text and topic, it also enables them to choose the appropriate balance of narrative/fiction, non-fiction and poetry for their context. Scanning a detailed description (seen by clicking on the diamond button beside the plan title or the title itself) means teachers can specifically select plans which focus on objectives they want to cover.

Years 1 to 6 Maths Teaching Sequences that are compatible with the principles of the Primary Strategy are now available online. Users can cut and paste them to create weekly plans if required. Resources with answers and Mental & Oral Starters are also provided and sometimes we refer to particular schemes we know, though the sequences are designed to be freestanding and therefore compatible with other maths materials too. A Medium Term Planning document is included with advice for mixed age range classes. Some new FREE Foundation Plans written by Ruth Merttens are available for Spring & Summer Terms from Ginn/Heinemann. Click here to find out more.

The old Weekly Maths Plans found by clicking the Plan Archive tab, are provided in specifically written sets of Weekly Plans, created for each half term, and matched to a NNS Medium Term Plan. There are single year group and mixed age range plans for maths (see below for details). These are easily adapted to the New Primary Framework. The New Framework emphasises three basic aspects of maths teaching:
· Review where children are before starting to teach a specific maths topic
· The importance of children talking and collaborating in their mathematics
· Put together, or ‘block’ weeks as appropriate to allow a sustained focus on a set of related topics.
The flexibility of Hamilton plans supports each of these aspects:
· Preview the plans in the ‘at a glance’ overview to enable your own review of children’s entry points to a topic
· Select and combine weekly plans to create your own ‘blocks’ of related topics
· Draw upon the many pupil activities in ALL Hamilton maths plans which develop collaboration and talk in a practical context.

In Autumn there is an overview of the Weekly Plans plans for the year, showing how they can be blocked to match the New Framework.

View the plans and resources available by clicking on the English or Maths tab and then selecting:

  • The Year* you teach – Reception to Y6, plus mixed age-range weekly plans (NLS English & Maths) for Y1/2, Y3/4, Y5/6, mixed age-range New Framework Literacy Units for R/Y1, Y1/2, Y3/4, Y5/6 and in NNS Maths only for R/Y1, Y2/3, Y4/5
  • The Term (Autumn, Spring or Summer)

The Search button will then reveal a list of the available plans! Click on the diamond-shaped button or on the Plan title to see details of each plan and the P button to open and download the plan itself. The resources are listed beside the Plan – click on them to download. You will also find other useful documents such as Booklists and ICT Support.
